Acute generalized weakness due to thyrotoxic periodic paralysis.

چکیده
T periodic paralysis (TPP) is a disorder characterized by thyrotoxicosis, hypokalemia and predominantly proximal lower limb paralysis. Despite the female predominance of hyperthyroidism, TPP occurs most frequently in males in a ratio of 20:1, and 90% of patients are of Asian descent. Prodromal symptoms may consist of muscle stiffness or cramping. Sensation, as well as bulbar and respiratory muscle strength, remains intact. Reflexes may be decreased or absent. Attacks may be precipitated by a high carbohydrate meal (secondary to insulin secretion) or physical exertion. In one series, 84% of attacks occurred between 1 and 6 am. Episodes are acute in onset and last 1–96 hours. As in this patient, symptoms and signs of hyperthyroidism may be subtle at initial presentation. Electrocardiographic findings such as ST-segment depression with T-wave flattening and the presence of U waves are TEACHING CASE REPORT PR AC T I C E

Thyrotoxic hypokalemic periodic paralysis is an uncommon complication of thyrotoxicosis, characterized by attacks of generalized muscular weakness associated with hypokalemia in patients with hyperthyroidism, most frequently with Graves-Basedow disease. Treatment with antithyroid drugs and potassium supplements reversed the symptoms and the episodes of acute muscular weakness did not reappear.
متن کاملLevothyroxine and Prednisone Causing Generalized Weakness in a Middle-Aged Man
Thyrotoxic induced hypokalemic periodic paralysis is a rare disorder that had been described in middle-aged men, predominantly Asians and Hispanics. This case presented with generalized weakness and hypokalemia after changing prescription for levothyroxine and starting prednisone to treat upper respiratory infection in a previously asymptomatic middle-aged Hispanic male. In this paper, we will ...

This study was carried out to investigate the causes of acute generalized weakness in children referred to Amirkola Children’s Hospital, in Babol, Iran. Methods: In this case series, the epidemiological causes of...

Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis is a disease characterized by recurrent episodes of paralysis and hypokalemia during a thyrotoxic state. Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis is a common complication of hyperthyroidism in Asian populations, but can affect other ethnic groups as well. Due to population mobility, Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis is increasingly common in Western countries. Early diagnosis and...

Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis is a rare endocrine disorder seen predominantly in men of Asian origin. The case is reported of a patient who presented to the accident and emergency department with sudden onset of weakness of his lower limbs. Hypokalaemia was identified and treated with resolution of symptoms. Additional tests identified the patient as being thyrotoxic. He was treated with oral a...
متن کاملThyrotoxic periodic paralysis: a case report and review of the literature.
Hypokalemic periodic paralysis occurring in thyrotoxicosis is rare in Caucasians and is not often highlighted as an endocrine emergency. Periodic paralysis, without familial background, manifests only in the thyrotoxic patient. Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis is a self-limiting disorder that is cured by the treatment of the underlying hyperthyroidism. We report an unusual case of acute onset weak...
